How MIDI note numbers work

MIDI identifies every pitch with a number from 0 to 127. Each step is one semitone, so adding 12 moves up exactly one octave: C is 0, 12, 24, 36… up to 120.

The number is what actually travels in a MIDI message; the note name and the frequency are just two ways of reading it.

60 = middle C (C4) and 69 = A4, concert pitch at 440 Hz.

MIDI note to frequency

With A4 = 440 Hz and 12-tone equal temperament, the frequency of note n:

f = 440 × 2(n − 69) / 12

The reverse, to find the nearest MIDI note of a frequency:

n = 69 + 12 × log2(f / 440)

If your instrument is tuned to A4 = 432 Hz or 442 Hz, the note numbers stay the same — only the frequencies shift.

Middle C: C3, C4 or C5?

The MIDI standard defines note 60 as middle C but never defines how octaves are numbered, so every manufacturer picked its own.

This chart uses scientific pitch notation (60 = C4, also used by Roland) by default — switch to C3 or C5 above to match your DAW.

Yamaha calls the same note C3, and most DAWs followed Yamaha: Ableton Live, Logic Pro and Cubase all display 60 as C3. FL Studio shows it as C5.

If a note name in your software looks one octave off from this chart, that's why — the number 60 is identical everywhere, only the label changes.

Sharps and flats

MIDI stores only the number, so 61 can be written C#4 or Db4 — same key, same frequency. Which spelling you see in a DAW depends on the software, not on the MIDI data.

61C♯4D♭4

The chart lists the sharp name first and the flat name underneath.

Why only 128 notes?

A MIDI note number is a 7-bit value, which gives 27 = 128 possible values, 0 to 127. That range is far wider than any acoustic instrument.

Note 127 sits at 12,543 Hz, close to the limit of adult hearing. Note 0 (C−1, 8.18 Hz) is below the audible range — it exists for completeness, not for playing.
